We are looking for an Engineer (Research Council Officer (RCO)) in Advanced and Digital Manufacturing to support the Automotive and Surface Transportation Research Centre in Winnipeg. The Engineer activities in support of program area objectives include:

  • Advance NRC expertise in the field of additive manufacturing through the identification, execution, and management of engineering projects that are additions to the existing body of knowledge within the Additive Manufacturing discipline;
  • Apply design expertise, engineering process and best professional practices to resolve problems relevant to additive manufacturing technologies;
  • Engage stakeholders and clients by identifying opportunities, participating in business development and marketing activities as an engineering discipline leader, and building collaborations with local, national and international organizations;
  • Plan and execute innovative tests and experiments to support Advanced Manufacturing Program objectives; and
  • Develop numerical and graphical models to optimize engineering solutions and contribute to research and technology development.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

Experience

  • Experience troubleshooting and problem solving related to engineering design and testing;
  • Experience with mechanical design and integration into existing equipment;
  • Experience with prototype fabrication and design validation;
  • Experience with industrial control systems and industrial field bus communications; and
  • Experience planning and executing engineering/scientific test projects.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge in designing for metal additive manufacturing processes, including process control, industrial automation and system integration;
  • Strong investigative skills to determine requirements, identify dependencies,  generate designs, and critically evaluate alternatives for machine modification;
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot complex system interactions;
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to convey and interpret requirements, constraints, and limitations, and to support documentation of work progress;
  • Understands practical constraints, limitations, as well as opportunities, of different manufacturing techniques with a strong emphasis on design for manufacture; and
  • Knowledge of Siemens NX CAD an asset.

This position is classified as a Research Council Officer (RCO), a group that is unique to the NRC. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $57,220 to $161,754 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.
